A four week program designed to help you build an amazing design portfolio and get ready to land a job.
You’ll spend four weeks with a RookieUp mentor learning how to create comprehensive portfolio projects customized to your career goals and building a beautiful portfolio site that will impress employers. You’ll finish with a new set of detailed projects, a finished portfolio site, and an action plan for landing a job.
Who it’s for:
Aspiring Visual and UX/UI Designers
How it works:
Work with a mentor to outline your career goals and identify a series of portfolio projects that will help you achieve those goals. You’ll work on your projects and portfolio site over 4-6 weeks, getting ongoing feedback from your mentor via video chats and written feedback.
It’s perfect for you if:
- You’re just starting to learn design and want to work with a mentor to build your first portfolio projects
- You’ve completed a few online courses and want to start building more comprehensive projects
- You’ve spent some time learning design (on your own or in a course) and want help outlining your career goals and figuring out the right projects to work on
The Build Your Portfolio Timeline
You’ll complete our Career Goals exercises and meet with your new mentor over video chat for the first time. Based on type of career you want to build in the design industry, you’ll work with them to identify a series of portfolio projects to work on over the next four weeks that will maximize your chances of landing a job.
You’ll start working on your projects (using our step-by-step Project Frameworks, our monthly real client projects, or creating your own projects from scratch using our other detailed frameworks), receiving ongoing feedback from your mentor. Every week, you’ll upload 2-3 drafts of your current project for written feedback from your mentor, and you’ll finish each week with a video chat to review progress and discuss next steps.
You’ll work with your mentor to start polishing your portfolio site, learning how to structure the site itself and how to showcase your new projects beautifully so that you’ll be able to stand out to employers.
You’ll do a final review of your projects and portfolio site with your mentor, making final changes and working with them to create an action plan to help you get ready to apply to jobs.
As you work towards your career goals, you can get an additional round of feedback on any future drafts of your projects, resume, or portfolio site from your mentor. And you’ll have ongoing support from the RookieUp community via our private Facebook group.
You’ll finish with:
• A set of completed portfolio projects based on your career goals
• A polished portfolio website
• A career action plan and next steps
• Permanent access to our all of our project frameworks, perks, and resources

Our project frameworks were designed with the help of designers and recruiters from across the creative industry. Rather than assign the same one-size-fits-all projects and mini challenges to everyone, our frameworks guide you step-by-step and teach you how to build unique projects based on real problems that match your industry and career interests. And if you already have ideas for projects you want to work on, you can! By the end of the program, you’ll be a better designer and will have a portfolio full of comprehensive projects that are customized to you and you alone.
Real client projects
Employers love to see real client work in portfolios because it shows that you can work under real world constraints. So every month, we have real design briefs that you can work on with amazing nonprofits and startups!
Our 30+ step-by-step frameworks are the most comprehensive you’ll find anywhere and focus on the types of real world projects, from App Design to Web Design to Branding + Identity, that employers want to see in junior and mid-level portfolios (trust us, we asked).
You’ll get access to all of our other frameworks, from a guide to building your portfolio site and personal branding, to a step-by-step side project launch plan, to resources and creative briefs you can use to find your own clients!
